Footing Load Tests: A New Approach to Improving Dynamic Foundation Design

This paper will present the Footing Load Test (FLT), conceived in partnership with the UC Berkley Civil Engineering Department. The test uses a FUNDEX Pile Load Tester (PLT) (traditionally used to test deep foundations such as piers and piles) to cyclically impact full scale footings with large loads up to 800 kips. Test results were used to improve dynamic foundation design values for UC Berkeley structures. Most of the structures at the campus are founded in fractured and weathered shale and sandstone, where it is difficult to estimate the rock properties based on test boring and laboratory data, and therefore foundation design values are typically based on presumptive and/or empirical values. The FLTs provide a direct measure of foundation stiffness and bearing capacity and can be used to reduce uncertainty in design of future buildings at the Campus.
