After briefly reviewing a few aspects concerning the buckling behavior and design of pitched-roof plane steel frames, the paper presents and discusses the results of an investigation dealing with the post-buckling behavior, imperfection-sensitivity and mode interaction in such portal frames. These results, obtained by means of an asymptotic-numerical method (perfect frames) or FEM analyses performed using the program ABAQUS (imperfect frames), include (ⅰ) the post-buckling behavior and imperfection-sensitivity of pitched-roof frames bifurcating in buckling modes with anti-symmetric (AS) and symmetric (S) shapes, and (ⅱ) the influence of AS-S mode interaction on the structural behavior of frames with coincident bifurcation loads. In particular, the issues addressed include (ⅰ) assessing the influence of the rafter compression level and column base stiffness on the AS and S post-buckling behavior and imperfection-sensitivity and (ⅱ) identifying the most detrimental frame imperfection configuration under AS-S mode coupling.
