In general, system problems regarding throughput and blockage fall into two broad categories. In some cases, the problems are due to a variety of relatively trivial causes, for example, a diverter valve wrongly set or a motor failure on a feeder. In general, these problems are identified and rectified during commissioning. However, in other cases, the problems are more fundamental in nature and much less obvious to identify.rnRecent advances in smart sensing techniques and portable data acquisition systems mean that on-line monitoring of the critical parameters can be readily used as a cost effective diagnostic tool.rnFrom the case studies outlined in this paper, it can be seen that the solutions to the problems are often relatively obvious once the current operating performance is established. However, for the measurements to be of real value, the various parameters need to be measured simultaneously and a time history obtained.rnExperience has shown that this technique can be beneficial in avoiding expensive, misguided remedies and often leads to successful solutions to conveying problems on the first attempt.
