Development of environment technology from laboratory to pilot plant and its use for commercial scale deployment for effluent water treatment & water use, brackish water desalination into potable water and in different industrial separations including decontamination of liquid effluents for their safe disposal into the environment has been research & development work of the author at Industrial Research Laboratories (India), Shikohabad (U.P.) and Technical Research Institute, Mathura (U.P.).Here is given a brief description of pressure driven membrane processes viz. reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, microfilltration. Selection of polymeric candidate materials, preparation of semi-permeable membranes and their characterization has been discussed. Various applications of these processes have been presented. Large scale deployment of membrane processes for brackish water desalination has also been indicated. Such R&D studies have thrown a light on the way to indigenous membrane processes to be used on commercial scale in sugar and other industries in various separation process stages and in effluent treatment.
