The considerable difference in size between a sugar molecule, about 0.001 μm, and for example most melter liquor color bodies, about 0.004 to 0.2 μm, would suggest a natural application for membranes technology, which is after all partition based primarily on molecular size and only secondarily on other attributes, such polar with or functionality.The prospects for economic membrane utilization in the sugar industry no longer appear to be constrained by the state of materials science, which was the case 25 years ago. Recent progress suggests that membranes are most likely to be used successfully in the future in conjunction with other unit operations, including a second membrane process, to accomplish a specific task.
