Field experiments were conducted during 2002 - 05 at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Regional Research Station, Karnal with the objective to increase area under autumn planting of sugarcane and chickpea through intercropping of these crops without affecting the productivity of sugarcane and chickpea, This can be achieved by mechanized sowing of chickpea as intercrop on raised bed and sugarcane in furrows using bed planter. Intercropping of chickpea with sugarcane was evaluated in seven different treatments combination for yield, yield attributing characters and quality of sugarcane and economics of intercropping system. Millable canes and cane yield were significantly reduced due to intercropping of chickpea. However, germination percentage and quality of sugarcane were not significantly affected by intercropping. The chickpea yield was statistically at par in all the different treatments. Sugarcane has no adverse effect on chickpea yield whereas sugarcane yield was reduced by 14.65 % when chickpea was intercropped with sugarcane in October. Autumn planted cane in October either as sole or intercropped with chickpea recorded 34.3% and 14.6% higher cane yield respectively compared to planting of sugarcane after harvesting of chickpea.Intercropping of chickpea with sugarcane was beneficial than sole sugarcane under both dates of planting. Net returns (Rs. 72345/ha), and benefit: cost ratio (2.27) was maximum when chickpea was intercropped with sugarcane in October as compared to sole sugarcane.
