A field study was conducted for three cropping seasons at research farms of Punjab Agricultural University at Ludhiana (2002-03 and 2003-04) and Faridkot (2003-04) to determine the optimum nitrogen requirement of sugarcane/raya and sugarcane/cabbage intercropping systems. Ten treatment combinations consisting of two intercropping system i.e. sugarcane with raya (Brassicajuncea) (1:2) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea var capitata) (1:1) in main plots, both supplied with five nitrogen levels - 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of recommended to intercrops in sub plots, were replicated thrice in a split plot design. In addition to graded nitrogen levels applied to intercrops, sugarcane crop in all the treatments was supplied with uniform recommended N dose of 225 kg N/ha. In sugarcane/ raya system 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% nitrogen received 225, 237.5, 250, 262.5 and 275 kg N/ha, respectively, while in sugarcane/cabbage 225, 240.6, 256.2, 271.8 and 287.5 kg N/ha. Averaged over three locations and nitrogen levels, sugarcane /cabbage intercropping recorded higher cane yield (79.0 t/ha) as compared to sugarcane/raya (70.5 t/ha), however, the net returns and B:C ratio were higher in sugarcane/raya intercropping (Rs 52,630/ha, 0.96) as compared to Rs. 46,130 /ha and 0.69 in sugarcane /cabbage. Averaged over intercropping systems, cane yield, intercrop yield and net returns remained statistically uninfluenced by nitrogen at all the locations, indicating that N dose recommended for sole crop of autumn sugarcane (225 kg N/ha) was sufficient to meet the nitrogen requirement of sugarcane / raya or cabbage intercropping systems. Cane quality remained uninfluenced by intercropping systems and nitrogen.
