The County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works has created and maintains a network of websites that makes available to the public a wide array of environmental information and services. 888CleanLA.com, the main point of entry to these websites, provides the Internet gateway for the County's residential recycling, yard waste, and business recycling programs; youth education programs; online materials exchange; extensive household hazardous waste program; industrial waste program; stormwater management program; and many others. The 888CleanLA.com website is a valuable source of information available to the public 24/7 for environmental issues in the County. This paper discusses the "Keys for Success" that the County of Los Angeles learned in its efforts to build, maintain, and grow the 888CleanLA.com website, including: 1. Unique issues with public sector websites 2. Developing a plan for growth that will prevent chaos and assure quality 3. Considerations in establishing standards for site design, page layout, content, and review processes 4. No cost/low cost "do-it-yourself as well as commercial strategies for promoting your environmental website 5. Avoiding the "Lone Ranger Syndrome".
