Open celled metal foams can be produced by replication method using polyurethane sponge as template and metal powder slurry coating and sintering. The paper describes manufacturing and properties of such foams on the example of a stainless steel 316L (1.4404). The results show that samples in the full range of cell sizes (10-80 ppi) and with densities between 0,3-0,8 g/cm~3 can be obtained. Permeability, sound absorption and compression strength prove the complete transformation of the spongeous polymer structure to the metal material and the general preservation of the open cellular structure. The results are of basic interest for applications like catalyst carriers, filters, sound absorbers and lightweight sandwich cores.
