The present paper highlights results from the priority program "Cellular Metals" of the Deutsche For-schungsgemeinschaft (DFG SPP 1075). Metallic foams were investigated by 3D micro tomography (3DμCT). Two types of aluminium foams (ALULIGHT and ALPORAS) as well as an iron based foam sintered from hollow spheres were used for investigation. The aim of this study was to develop 3D software tools which would be able to link the measured properties of the foams to mechanical parameters. A method to characterise the density and the homogeneity of the foams is proposed. An algorithm for pore detection and pore size calculation is presented, in addition a method for separation of wall and nodes. Internal deformation of samples after subsequent pressing is shown, a software tool for calculation of the partial shift in 3D is also demonstrated.
