Characterization and simulation of the mechanical behaviour of aluminium foams

The present paper highlights results from the priority program "Cellular Metals" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG SPP 1075). Until now only a few experimental results exist for characterization of the deformation behaviour of metal foams under a triaxial stress state. The influences of loading conditions on the fracture behaviour of metal foams were not characterized and described either. Moreover, only basic material models are available for the simulation of the mechanical behaviour of metal foams. Therefore, a special technique for triaxial tests was developed and applied to determine the dependency of the flow behaviour of aluminium foams on the stress triaxiality. In addition, uniaxial tension and compression tests, shear and bending tests were performed to quantify the influence of the loading state. A damage criterion was introduced into the material model derived by Deshpande and Fleck and implemented into a finite element program. The extended Deshpande/Fleck model was used to simulate selected component tests.
