The life assessment of high-energy plant relies upon obtaining information on the current condition of the materials in service. While uniaxial creep tests have been traditionally used for this purpose, small punch (SP) creep testing simplifies sample removal and allows more tests pre unit volume of material. This paper details the SP creep test method as applied to low alloy steels. The 9.5mm diameter disc specimens are loaded with a hemispherical punch. The deformation is measured using high precision transducers and produces time -deformation creep curves that are comparable to those obtained from standard uniaxial tests. Similar load and temperature dependences are also obtained. Comparison of the SP data with uniaxial results shows there to be an empirical relationship between the SP load and the equivalent uniaxial test stress. The results of this work support the development of a Code of Practice for SP testing for potential worldwide applications.
