The experimental results on a novel interferometric fiber optical gyro (IFOG) with light beams circulating in the Sagnac sensing ring (SSR) are reported. One of its key elements, the high power super luminescent diode (SLD) is studied. For separately detecting and compensating the Sagnac phase shift between the clockwise wave (CW) and counterclockwise wave (CCW) light beams circulating in the SSR for a certain number (2 ― 4) of round-trips, the electronics of photodetector (PD) and the modulation approach of all-digital closed loop (ADCL) electronics are investigated. The experimental setup for closed loop operation of the IFOG has been realized successfully which is demonstrated by drift rates test results. For further compensating the propagation loss of light beams in the SSR, a bi-directional semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) should be inserted to form an active SSR.
