Titanium is an attractive replacement for steel in US Army Systems such as armored vehicles and engine components where weight is a concern, however, the high cost of titanium has slowed implementation. Powder metallurgy is a cost effective route for the production of near-net shapes and the current paper summarizes an evaluation of various titanium powder sources. Microstructures of the compacts produced from different powders along with their mechanical properties are reported. The powders produced from turnings and sponge by the hydrogenate-dehydrogenate process are promising low-cost powders for the production of cost affordable titanium parts. Acceptable mechanical properties can be obtained in plates and rods processed from the low cost powders.
