Along with the prohibition of studded tires in many countries in winter, the development of new and excellent all-season tires and studless tires as well as the adoption of advanced control techniques are becoming increasingly important for stability and safety of a vehicle on ice and snow. To assist in the designs both of winter tires and of control strategies, understanding the friction mechanism and characteristics of rubber and/or tires on such surfaces is necessary. Friction on ice and snow is both material and system dependent. This paper will first present the idea of passive and active control modes for tire traction. Then the major factors affecting friction characteristics of rubber and full-scale tire on ice and snow are reviewed and analyzed together with an overview of the friction mechanisms of rubber on ice and snow. Finally, methods for predicting performance and friction characteristics of tires in winter are discussed. The relative research work recently done by the authors as well as the most advanced technological aspects and current trends are also introduced and some suggestions are presented.
