Kawasaki Steel Corporation (KSC) is operating nine coke oven batteries of the Carl Still type. These batteries are 28 years old on average, including the oldest that is 35 years old. Though the batteries are not suffering fatally for the coke production, their antiquity forces us to increase annual expenditures for their upkeep. Needless to say, an enormous capital expenditure is needed to rebuild or construct a new battery. Therefore, the prolongation of the lifetime of the coke oven is one of our most important issues. This paper deals with some technologies which contribute to prolonging the lifetime of a coke oven battery more than 50 years as a target: 1) Prevention of carbon deposition on oven walls. 2) End flue burner, which helps to maintain a proper temperature distribution along the oven length. 3) Hot repair of end-flue bricks in the heating chamber via using pre-assembled fused silica block while the adjacent ovens are under operating.
