This paper reports on Al-Y-Ni-Co, Al-Mn-Ce/Fe and Al-Cu-Fe amorphous or (nano)-quasicrystalline powders, consolidated bulk specimens and cast rods as examples for advanced high-strength lightweight Al alloys. Results for the development of the microstructure under different processing conditions and for the thermal stability of the metastable alloys will be given. Moreover, data for the mechanical deformation behavior at different temperatures will be presented, revealing that the properties can be tuned within a wide range of strength and ductility as a function of volume fraction and morphology of the different phases.
