A simultaneous study of chemical durability, film formation and surface chemistry carried out in identical conditions to cell culture studies was correlated to cell behavior on seven silicate glass substrates. "Normal" cell behavior was noted on durable glass without boron and on glass with boron that formed a leached layer. Extensive cell coverage observed on bioactive glasses correlated to calcium phosphate film formation. Early cell behavior was dominated by initial interfacial chemistry whereas later cell behavior was regualted by the dynamic nature of the glass surface chemistry.
