Aggressive Corrosion of Sodium Silicate Glass by a Drip Technique

The corrosion of glass under drip conditions has been investigated in this study. Pre-heated deionized water was dripped at a constant rate on to the top face of a small sample of 20N glass, causing the gradual deterioration of the glass. The corrosion of the glass with time was monitored at fixed time intervals using Fourier Transform Infrared Reflection Spectroscopy (FT-IRRS). The analysis showed a progressive increase in the Si-O-Si stretch vibration (approx 1080 wavenumbers) and a progressive decrease in the Si-O stretch vibration peak (approx 950 wavenumbers), verifying the gradual leaching of the sodium out of the sample.
