The new soybean herbicide,imazamox,1 differs significantly form the other imidzaolinone herbicides bacuase of its soil residual beahvior,allowing rotaitional planting of imidazolinone-sensitie crops.HTis beahivor was the key to its discovery.In ord erto detemine if soil persistence could be relatee to strucutre,and early set of imidzolinone analogs had been field stested.A synthesei sporgrma was subsequently undertaken to optimize activity and to find active ocmpounds with reduced hydrolytic or metabolic stabilty.Some of these mnewer analogs had much less pre- than postemergence greenhouse activity,and we hypothesized which substituents were repsonsible for their soil deactiveation.The results poointed to advanced stuides of the highly active 5-mehtoxymethyl ocmpound.1.in soil,1 undergoes degradation to the 5-carboxy analog,9,a compound with low herbicidal activity.
