Two separate and distinct steps, which have not been well understood or widely practiced, must be taken in order to effectively implement state-of-the-art wet end chemistry. The first is stabilizing the wet end, and the second is optimizing process chemistry. The wet end is stabilized by maintaining a constant level of drainage, and an unchanging couch vacuum. Use of appropriate chemicals, combined with contorl of headbox drainage and zeta potential, enables process chemistry to be optimized at minimum chemicals cost. This can be accomplished while maintaining selective and independent control of retention, drainage and formation. The technology is described, using the example of re-cycle newsprint. The relative ineffectualness of traditional methodologies is briefly discussed.
