In order to understand the effects of TiO_2 particle morphology on paper physical and optical properties, uniform spherical hollow particles have been synthesized using the templating method. Two types of templates, cellulose nanowhiskers with different aspect ratios and spherical silica particles ranging in size from 220 nm to 2 μm were used. It was found that the shape of the non-spherical template particles was not preserved after layer-by-layer coating. In principal, the aspect ratio of the hollow particles can be tuned by controlling the coating layer thickness. Experimental results indicated that the shell thickness and crystallite size of the titania shells were controllable.
