Cyclodextrins increase belt-pressed cake solids of both biological and primary sludge when added to the sludge slurry after the polymer. A mill trial showed a 2.8 percentage point increase in cake solids combined with a 19% decrease in polymer use. Surface tension and turbidity measurements demonstrate that cyclodextrins are able to agglomerate cationic polymers. It is believed that the cyclodextrin improves dewatering by acting as an inexpensive flocculant. The cyclodextrins are effective at very low dosage, which makes them commercially attractive.
