Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) of Duplex Stainless Steel (DSS) has been experienced in several pulp mill digesters and other pulp mill ancillary equipment. The susceptibility of DSS to stress corrosion cracking is mainly attributed to the heating processes involved during the manufacturing of industrial equipments, which may change the dual microstructure (ferrite/austenite ratio) of the steel, making it more prone to cracking in aggressive environments and high temperature. This study is focused on material properties which make DSS susceptible to SCC in pulping liquors.
