This paper summarizes the evaluation and effects ofrncompletion alternatives on the productivity and economicsrnconcerning the redevelopment of the Uracoa field in SouthernrnMonagas, Venezuela. It explains how horizontal gravel packrntechnology restored well productivity and improved longevity.rnProduction from the Uracoa Field consists of heavy crudernranging from 11° to 16° API. The initial redevelopmentrncompletion scenario used horizontal wells with slotted linersrnin open hole. However, subsequent breakthrough of waterrncaused catastrophic sand production that plugged the wellsrnwhere slotted liners were implemented. In order to producernthe Uracoa Field economically, it was necessary to perform arntechnical evaluation of in-field completion and drillingrnpractices to resolve production issues for sand control, highrnCO2 production, 13-14% asphaltene content, wellrnproductivity, and well longevity.rnAfter evaluating completion and drilling practices, horizontalrngravel packing technology was used to restore wellrnproductivity and longevity. In order to achieve optimumrnproductivity, it was necessary to do extensive fluidsrncompatibility testing to determine the overall best drilling andrncompletion practices. To date, over 65 horizontal wells havernbeen gravel packed in conjunction with a large number ofrnhighly deviated wells. These gravel packs make use of waterpackingrntechniques and maintain higher productivity evenrnafter water breakthrough.rnThe paper reviews completion and well experience withrnslotted liners, evaluates completion practices, and comparesrncompletion technologies implemented in the Uracoa Field tornachieve economic productivity. Finally, data presentedrndemonstrates the ability to maintain productivity even afterrnwater breakthrough.
