Material balance evaluation can be conducted at every stage ofrnreservoir development, including production rejuvenationrnusing horizontal wells. Material balance evaluation for arnreservoir with water influx usually begins with the calculationrnof water influx quantities using aquifer models (the aquiferrnmodel approach). The calculated influx quantities arernsubstituted into material balance equations that are arranged inrnstraight-line formats. Should a linear slope be found, thernoriginal-hydrocarbons-in-place is the y-intercept. The key to arnsuccessful evaluation using the aquifer model approach lies inrnthe selection of a representative aquifer model. Selecting arnrepresentative aquifer model is difficult due to reservoirrnuncertainties such as rock properties, and the size, geometry,rnand continuity of the aquifer. Also, influx calculations usingrnthe aquifer model approach are time-consuming because theyrnusually require a trial and error method of solution.rnThis paper presents a material balance equation in a form thatrnallows for calculating water influx without the use of anrnaquifer model. This approach has many applications and isrnparticularly useful for production rejuvenation projects, suchrnas the drilling of horizontal wells.
