Application of horizontal wells has increased tremendouslyrnand had significant and positive results in the U.S. over thernpast decade. The pace of horizontal drilling for oil hasrnremained high since 1990 (approximately 600 to 1,000rnwells/yr). Most of these wells have been drilled in three formations:rnthe Austin chalk in Texas (79%), the Bakken shalernin North Dakota (5%), and the Niobrara in Colorado andrnWyoming (2%). Wells drilled in other formations constituternapproximately 14%. The Dept. of Energy Natl. PetroleumrnTechnology Office (DOE/NPTO), working closely withrnindustry, developed a unique analytical system (includingrnmodels and database) to assess the potential for wider applicationrnof this technology to the balance of remaining U.S.rnOil resources across a variety of formations. The findings ofrnthe DOE effort are the primary scope of this paper.
