This paper is a review of a 2D Rotary Steerable System asrnused to control the inclination of over 200 horizontal wells.rnHorizontal well drilling is a common directional drillingrntechnique enabling access to hydrocarbon reserves whilstrnlowering field development costs and improving wellrnproduction. In order to maximise drilling in the “filet mignon”rnof the reservoir, geologists often require tight TVD corridorsrnto be maintained. To achieve this, TVD corrections can bernmade in either rotary or oriented mode. Both methods arernevaluated in terms of their effectiveness and efficiency.rnFactors in favour of a 2D Rotary Steerable System are: it isrnreliable, proven and adds significant value to the drillingrnprocess. It is effective because it enables tight TVD objectivesrnto be met. It is efficient because it increases Rates ofrnPenetration (ROP) whilst improving well-bore quality. Thesernbenefits are direct consequences of eliminating orientedrninclination control, the smoothing out of well-bore curvaturern(dogleg severity) and the continuous mechanical agitation ofrncuttings beds. Considerable offset data (Ref 1 to 7 inc) showsrnhow directional drillers have used rotary BHA’s to meet tightrnTVD objectives; much to the satisfaction of Geologists.
