The United States has maintained occupied facilities at the geographic South Pole, known as Amundsen-Scott (South Pole) Station, for over 40 years. Over time the installation has been periodically up-graded in response to factors such as increased science needs, and to meet the demands of the exceptional climatic conditions. The Antarctic Polar Plateau is the most extreme inhabited cold region environment in the world. The station is about 2,835 m (9,355 feet) above sea level. Summertime temperatures average -28deg C (-18 deg F) with an annual mean temperature of -49deg C (-56deg F) with winter extremes to -83deg C (-117deg F). The station is only accessible for about three and one half months during the austral summer, from roughly early November to mid February.
