The Amundsen-Scott Station is located on the Antarctic Polar Plateau at the geographic South Pole. This location poses one of the most extreme cold regions environments in the world. The field location is 2,835 m (9,355 feet) above sea level. Average summertime temperatures are approximately -28 deg C (-18deg F) and average wintertime temperatures are -49deg C (-56deg F) with extremes ranging from -14 deg C (+7deg F) to -83deg C (-117deg F).
