There is a stark contrast in living conditions between the urban areas of Alaska and the 275 communities of rural Alaska. Most of Alaska's 620,000 people are concentrated in a few population centers such as Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, while must of the land remains undeveloped and inaccessible. Alaska's geographically and culturally diverse population has unique sanitation needs. This has lead to a wide diversity in types of water and wastewater facilities each community may have.
