Tree failure in storms pose a risk to people, property and infrastructure. Tree damage to the electric utility infrastructure is a significant cost and public safety issue. Traditional utility tree management practices do not reduce the risk of tree damage in storms. A targeted Hazardous Tree Mitigation strategy can be integrated into conventional utility tree management practices to cost effectively reduce the risk of storm-caused damage to the electric utility infrastructure. In can be accomplished with the application of risk assessment concepts, knowledge of how tree fail in storms, an understanding of the characteristics of trees with a high probability of failure and analysis an electric distribution system outage patterns.
