The Berkakit - Tommot - Yakutsk Railway under construction now passes areas with very icy permafrost soils and underground ice, thawing of which can cause dangerous deformation of the track. In order to repair and prevent these deformations, a design document has been prepared. It contains design requirements and techniques for protecting the roadbed; a discussion of engienering-geocrylological conditions of the route, particularly construction methods and deformations on the roadbed; suggestions motivating topographical and engineering-geocryological data; design, organization and techniques for protective actions; and usage requirements or limitations of roadbed sections subjec to or potentially subject to deformation. Recommended actions are determined on the base of an analysis of available design experience, as well as new research developments. Stipulated undertaking engineering-geocryological monitoring, ensuring reliable checking for the track record engineering-geocryological conditions and stability of roadbed, evaluation of efficiency of realized actions and well-timed adjustment as needed.
