The United States operates the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station for scientific research. Due to the high costs, logistical constraints, and environmental risks of transporting large quantifies of diesel fuel to the Antarctic interior, the National Science4 Foundation (NSF) has supported practical investigations into the use of wind and solar energy to reduce the amount of fuel needed to meet the power requirements of the station.
