This paper presents an analysis of alternatives available for domestic sewage sludge disposal for Eielson Air Force Base (AFB), Alaska. Land application, incineration, composting, and disposal as a solid waste in a landfill were each evaluated on the basis of feasibility, relative cost, community acceptance and regulatory compliance. The least expensive and most feasible alternative was land application. The arctic environment provides a very short field season in which to work, so time must be used effectively and advanced planning is required. Eielson AFB is a military installation, where the programming, budgeting, and funding of projects can be a complex process. The proposed management plan for the disposal of domestic sewage sludge at Eielson AFB could be ued by other Northern communities considering options for sewage sludge disposal.
