Concentration effect of salt solution on the corrosion of carbon steels investigated by salt spray test

Corrosion of automotive steels was investigated by accelerated corrosion tests such as salt spray test (SST) and cyclic corrosion test (CCT) using different concen-trations of 1% and 5% NaCl solution. The corrosion behaviors of the automotive cold-rolled (CR) carbon steels and Zn-coated steels were influenced by the test conditions such as continuous wet state in SST or cyclic wet and dry states in CCT. CRs were more damaged with highly localized corrosion tendency in CCT where the corrosive agents were concentrated in rust layer during wet and dry cycles at high temperature. Zn-coated steels were less damaged in CCT due to the formation of protective corro-sion products. The painted CRs and Zn-coated steels are also influenced by the con-dition of CCT and SST. Large blisters in the painted CRs were formed in CCT, but in SST for Zn-coated steels. However, salt concentration had no significant influence on the corrosion behaviors both of bare and painted automotive steels. No valid trend of corrosion behavior was found as a function of concentrations of salt solution in the present study.
