INTRODUCTION During the last decade, compoundspecific stable carbon isotope (δ13C) analysis has become a valuable tool for the discrimination among products of different geological origins. The combination of gas chroma-tography (GC) with isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) facilitates analyzes individual compounds in a mixture at natural isotopic abundance level or in enriched samples (Meier-Augenstein, 1999). It was not until 1990 that gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) instruments became commercially available. Since then, GC-C-IRMS technique has been developed and applied to diverse fields such as biogeochemistry, atmospheric chemistry, plant ecology, and archaeology (Lichtfouse, 2000; Brand, 1996).
