INTRODUCTION Testate amoebae are an important group of protozoans with an organic shell composed of either synthesized idiosomes (filose Rhizopoda) or external xenosomes (lobose Amoebozoa), and are found worldwide in freshwater environments (Mitchell et al., 2008; Charman et al., 2000). Testate amoebae feed on bacteria, phytoplankton or other microorganisms and have been shown to be sensitive to environmental conditions in peatlands, especially to moisture conditions such as the depth to water table, which makes them very useful for paleohydrological reconstruction (Swindles et al., 2009; Payne et al., 2008; Booth, 2007; Charman et al., 2000; Medioli and Scott, 1988).
