Once upon a time there was a king who won all battles against dragons and wicked witches, due to the magic power of his sword. The earlier processing was by solid phase transformation, as we have seen. Rapid solidification processing started when it became possible to deal with small amounts of material. In fact, the rapid dissipation of the latent heat and of the thermal energy is possible in the presence of large temperature gradients, which can be achieved across thin layers.
