The nature of forced and convective flows in crystal growth from the melt are briefly described with particular reference to Czochralski growth. The concept of constitutional supercooling is introduced and the evolution of a cellular structure described. Morphological stability theory is reviewed and the effects of external forces on morphological stability of both single and polyphase systems are considered.
