Minerals, as natural crystals, are major constituents of the Earth. Present day geophysical models accept a crystalline state of the earth-forming condensed matter everywhere except in the outermost envelope of the Fe-rich nucleus of our planet. If rocks of the continental crust are known for long to be mostly crystalline, those from the oceanic crust are also now known to be so from submarine exploration and deep-sea drilling projects. As a whole the earth's crust, dominated by silicate minerals, exhibits a rigid behaviour down to the Moho discontinuity (some 8-10 km under sea floor, some 30 to 70 km under the continents).
