In a growing number of applications, thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) are used as alternatives to thermoset rubber because of their ability to reduce the total fabrication cost and increase the design flexibility (as an example, the combination of soft and hard materials by overmolding). Like traditional thermoset rubbers, TPEs possess elastomeric properties. However, TPEs can be processed by conventional thermoplastic techniques such as injection molding, extrusion, and blow molding. Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) are an alloy type of TPE consisting of fully crosslinked rubber domains suspended in a continuous thermoplastic phase. The most commonly available TPV is based on the combination of polypropylene (PP) and EPDM rubber. As compared to thermoplastics, these materials offer some unique properties, such as lower compression set and greater resilience.Silicone based TPVs under the trade name of TPSiV~(TM) are a patented technology of Multibase, A Dow Corning Company. As an alloy type TPE, it combines the many unique properties of silicone rubber, such as excellent property retention at low and high temperatures as well as selected thermoplastics matrices. Previously the unique properties and applications of silicone TPVs utilizing nylon and thermoplastic urethane matrices have been presented (1). This paper will describe the properties and applications for silicone based TPVs utilizing polyolefm matrices.
