Vistamaxx~(TM) specialty polyolefin elastomer (SPE) is a polyolefin elastomer with isotactic propylene crystallinity. This polymer contains a predominant amount of propylene with isotactic propylene crystallinity, with the balance of the composition being ethylene and other α-olefins. This new family of thermoplastic elastomer is highly elastic and exhibits excellent recovery from deformation. These polymers share the processability of conventional polyolefins such as polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene and can, thus, be easily formed into molded articles, film, fibers and nonwovens.Blending SPE with polypropylene at different proportions results in a very interesting material similar to conventional TPO products. The elasticity and other physical properties of the compound can be tailored by selecting the proper grades of both SPE and PP as well as the ratio of PP and SPE. The higher the SPE content, the higher the extrusion rate because of the lower crystallinity of SPE. The elasticity and softness of the blend compound can be optimized by the blend ratio and polymer selection to meet specific needs. As the percentage of SPE increases, the impact strength, softness and elasticity of the compound is also increased. The extrusion performance of the blend is also affected by the blend ratio. A study on the blend of 35 MFR polypropylene resin and SPE of various MFR were examined and the extrusion behaviors of the blend reported.
