We report the template-directed growth of polyaniline nanostructures at Au electrodes modified with mixed monolayers of 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) and noctadecanethiol (ODT). Adsorbed 4-ATP serves as a nucleation site for polymer growth when these monolayers are oxidized in aqueous aniline solutions: Islands of 4-ATP within the ODT film template the growth of small polyaniline domains. AFM experiments reveal an average feature diameter of 150 nm and an average height of 7 nm. The number density of nanostructures scales with the mole fraction of 4-ATP in the monolayer and the concentration of anniline in solution.
