Comparative scanning tunneling microscopy studies of CoFe_2O_4 nanoparticles of ferrofluids in acidic medium

Within those ferrofluids dispersed in acidic water CoFe_2O_4, nanoparticles possess a regular spherical shape measuring approximately 2-6 nm in diameter. Within this colloid, aggregates (clusters of particles) have been observed that can be sorted into either strongly aggregating or weakly aggregating, according to scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images. The ratio of the two kinds of aggregates is very different depending upon whether the sample is wet or dry. We propose that aggregation or clustering morphology is determined by both internal and external interactions.
