One of the main environmental issues associated with aviation is greenhouse gas emissions, which in turn corresponds to fuel burn. Modern navigation allows for execution of optimal flight paths, so in this research we first simulate single aircraft trajectories. The terminal area of a sample area is considered. Fuel-based optimal descent paths with various time constraints are found. Based on these results, two aircraft descent paths are considered and the most advantageous sequencing is proposed depending on the terminal area entry point, aircraft type and initial time separation. It should be noted that the difference in the total fuel consumption can vary significantly with the arrival sequencing. The authors believe the proposed idea can be further developed into guidelines for air traffic controllers to help them execute the most environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient descent sequencing.
