Wing deformation of an ornithopter during a flapping cycle

Videogrammetry was used to quantify the deformations of an Ornithopter wing at a range of flapping frequencies. During the flapping cycle, as a result of the flexible nature of the wing, the aerodynamic and inertial loads impose significant wing deformation. Thus in order to assess the aerodynamic performance of flexible wings the deformation must be quantified. The approach taken was to measure the displacements and then prescribe these motions in an aerodynamic model which allowed the predictions of the dynamic thrust and lift coefficients. Using image analysis software, targets placed on the wing of the flapping model were tracked over several cycles. The displacement data was then used to quantify the dynamic twist, dynamic camber and spanwise bending of the wing. It was found that dynamic twist is the dominant mode of deformation.
