Pyrolitic carbon-silicon membranes (PCSiMs) were prepared from pyrolysis of polymeric precursor with two phases. An outstanding permselectivity was achieved for selected gas pairs such as O_2/N_2, CO_2/N_2, and He/N_2. The PCSiMs exhibit ideal separation factors for O_2/N_2 ranging from 10 to 25 depending on the compositional changes of the polymeric precursor. Ideal separation factors were as large as: He/N_2~1393 and CO_2/N_2~74. The highest permeability values are 1393 Barrers for He, 170 Barrers for O_2, and 765 Barters for CO_2. The PCSiMs will be expected as the potential candidate for an advanced membrane material for gas separation.
