An experimental study of ventilation in enclosures with a horizontal partition has been performed which indicates the following: (a) The velocity along the main axis of the upper compartment is reduced with decreasing Re number (decreasing "wind" velocity) indicating the diffusive character of flow for low Re numbers. (b) The effect of the opening thickness on the flow in the upper compartment is to reduce the velocities with decreasing opening height indicating higher ventilation effectiveness with greater opening height. (c) Ventilation time increases and hence ventilation effectiveness decreases with increasing Re number (increasing "wind" velocity). (d) Ventilation time increases and ventilation effectiveness decreases with increasing density (temperature) difference between external "wind" and enclosure. (e) Increase of horizontal partition thickness (opening thickness) has as a result the increase of ventilation effectiveness in the upper compartment of the enclosure.
