The mesoscale prognostic model PROMETEO, extended with an equation that describes the evolution of a non reactive pollutant (i.e. a mass conservation equation), has been applied to simulate the dispersion of carbon monoxide over the Barcelona Area, for a typical summer scenario. Both simulated meteorological and concentration data have been compared with measured data. The concentration fields have been analyzed in detail: the horizontal ones show the inland transport due to the sea breeze; while the vertical ones show the influence of the mixing layer on the concentrations and the importance of taking into account the returning flow generated by the breeze cell.
